I work at a small mom and pop deli only 5 or 6 employees. I have been there for the last four years and for the most part they have been good to me. However i have found a new job that almost limitless possibilities and they have offered to put me full time. Ive never had to put in two weeks notice before. What is the best way to go about doing it. What should i tell them and when is one day better then another. I know the sooner the better.

Giving two weeks notice (or any notice) is never easy. As an employer, I always appreciate honesty. I have never been upset with any employee who has left my business for a better opportunity. The day of the week doesn't matter. Bad news is bad news no matter when it is given. If you can, I always appreciate it when an employee offers help down the road if needed. This could be filling in on an odd Saturday or an evening. It could also be helping to train a new employee. Don't worry though. Although we don't like to hear it, none of us are irreplaceable.

Recommend telling them after rush hour (dinner) and hand them a written notice at the same time. Two weeks is the norm. Also make sure that you leave on good terms in case you ever have to consider asking for that job back.

Tell them as soon as possible that you have something serious to discuss with them, this way they will be prepared for what you have to say. Discuss a time and then sit down and talk.

You should be nice and give them enough time to at least try and find more help.
