I really can Not believe some of the answers I've read here.

I have know nurses who have, in their own simple worlds of simplicity, have stated that, ''those who attempt to end their own lives are just crying out for help.'' Yes, sure they are, BUT, what about the emotional state they must have gotten into to reach that point! And, Why was not their cry for Help answered?

Of course, there are many likely answers. But, to liken someone in a poverty stricken part of the world (as another respondent did) with that of ones own situation, is simply not a fair basis on which to lay an argument.

Likewise, to say that someone 'has not the moral courage to face things' is to simply 'ignore' the rational of that which the suicidal person faces.

It is likely that the sucidal person sees the rational of 'ending things' and the cesation of the turmoil as the way out from that turmoil. It does answer everything for him / her, whereas, the continual bickering of parties with no desire to see resolutions beyond their own Selfish ends, is the stuff of nightmares.

I see little or no compassion in any answers, no striving for understanding ...nor anything to give anyone who might be thinking of such an act, any sense of hope for any of these things from other writers here (so far).

I can feel proud to be a human being ~ sometimes, but not right now.

Sash.

I think it has to do with self worth, self esteem, and whether or not you believe that when things get so bad they can't get any worse, so they will eventually get better. It is the difference of having hope or feeling hopeless. My wife went through severe depression after she became disabled, however, she never even entertained or talked about ending her life. She has a lot of faith and I think that's what kept her holding on. I, on the other hand , have contemplated suicide in the past, however, now that I have her in my life, I would never consider it. She made me realize that suicide doesn't just end your life, but may end the lives (so to speak) of your family and friends who may never get over the guilt of not being able to save me. I now have a lot more faith than ever before in my life and have learned that through lifes ups and downs there is a lesson to be learned from everything we face and live through that makes us stronger, better people in the long run.

I do not think that you ARE thinking at times like this, one has to have gone over the edge. Not brave, beyond caring, simply a total breakdown, unless its one of the lesser, cries for help, then I guess it down to the individual, not the brain at all.

i don't think you can say that you would never contemplate suicide unless you had actually been there and experienced the low self worth that comes with the feeling of my life would be better if i wasn't here, when you are that low who's to say you wouldn't consider suicide, you have to experience the situation to give a truly honest answer

we shouldn't make excuses for selfish people - someone who commits suicide is pathetic with no sense of perspective e.g. If u top yourself because your girlfriend dumps you it fully explains that lack of character is probably the reason the dumping took place in the first place - compare a mother in africa struggling to find food for her children, with a man who loses his job in the west - which one has the harder life?. People feel very sorry for themselves in our society, people who commit suicide often lack the character to face adversity.

Someone who could commit suicide is strong , not tied down to crazy religious beliefs , Someone who is mentally strong enough to be able to take his or her own life, not scared of the unknown.
A free spirit.
