To factor a polynomial like this one, where the coefficient of the x^2 term is 1, you need to find factors of the last number (the constant 6) that add up to the number in the middle, -7 in this case. Both factors must be negative because their sum is negative and product is positive. While -3 and -2, for example, are factors of 6, they do not add up to -7 so this is not the factor pair we are looking for. However, -6 and -1 do add up to -7. These are therefore the constants inside of the binomials and x^2-7x+6 = (x-6)(x-1). Now you can factor any simple quadratic trinomial!

on these types of problems use "william's method"
right it out like you did
x^2 - 7x + 6
x^2 is x times x .
you are looking for two numbers that multiply together to give you the 6 that also add up -7.
6 times 1 is 6
-6 plus -1 is -7 right??
those are your two numbers
this is how you should write it down
x^2 -7x + 6
x -6
x -1
so you have (x-6) and (x-1) if your teacher wants you to solve these just set both of them equal to zero.
x-6=0 so x =6 x-1=0 so x=1

x^2 - S x + P Roots are a , b
Factors = (x - a)(x - b)
This is a quadratic equation where S = sum of roots and P = product of roots.
S = 7 & P = 6
Then,factors = (x - 6)(x - 1)

Your are looking for two numbers that when added equal -7 and when multiplied equal 6. The answer is (x-6)(x-1).

Step 1: use the rule (a - b)^2 = a^2 - 2ab + b^2, notice that 7=2*3.5
(x - 3.5)^2 = x^2 - 7x + 3.5^2
x^2-7x+6 = x^2 -7x + 3.5^2 - 3.5^2 + 6 = (x - 3.5)^2 - 3.5^2 + 6 =
= (x - 3.5)^2 - 12.25 + 6 = (x - 3.5)^2 - 6.25
Step 2: use the rule a^2 - b^2 = (a - b)(a + b)
6.25 = 2.5^2
From step 1:
x^2-7x+6 = (x - 3.5)^2 - 6.25 = (x - 3.5)^2 - 2.5^2 =
= (x - 3.5 - 2.5)(x - 3.5 + 2.5) = (x - 6)(x - 1)
