First of all, Darlene was a much more interesting character. But the Becky character was also of an age that the actresses were trying to build careers. So, when an opportunity came along, they wanted to take advantage of it. I also understand that Rosanne isn't the easiest person to get along with.

The original "Becky" saw the benefit of a college education over being a child actor. They replaced her with Chalke then reinstated once the original "Becky" had completed/or satisfied her need for a degree in something other than television.

Alicia went to college and that's when they replaced her with Sarah. After or during college Alicia missed acting and came back to the show and Sarah was replace by Alicia.

I know it's realy annoying when they change the characters and hope we don't notice. It totally ruins it. Loads of TV shows have done this.
