I live in South East Tennessee and we saw our first hummer on April 2nd and now its really cold again in the mornings. Could this cold snap kill an over eager north wandering hummer? I hope not.

From what I have read about hummers they can shut themselves down to preserve energy. I am a huge fan of hummers and we end of getting about 15 of them in our back yard every year. My heaven! An hour after I answered your question I looked out of my window and there was my first hummer and the temp is suppose to go way down this week-end!

I'm in North Carolina and my hummingbirds have already shown up too. The cold snap may kill the birds. When we have weather like we've had recently I don't put anything out until the first of May.Since they are already coming to your feeders the only advice I can give you is to bring in your feeders and they will leave and hopefully migrate a little lower down South until we are through with our cold snaps. Hope this helps

hummingbirds act on instinct, this is not the first cold snap they've had to endure, they'll find a place to nest until warmer weather comes back around, which it will very soon. I've seen my hummingbirds with snow on their tiny beaks trying to get liquid out of my feeders in early Spring..lol

I'm waiting for our hummingbirds to show up. I would think that the cold is just another obstacle for the birds. I'm sure they know what to do on instinct. Although it does seem a bit early for them to be migrating north. Hopefully they will be fine!
