Why is it that my optical mouse cursor just randomly starts scrolling upwards? How can I prevent this?

I use a mouse pad with mine when it started doing the same thing. and it stopped it from moving

If your PC is a laptop, disable the touch pad, more info in the PC User Manual.
If not a laptop, get the latest drivers from the mouse manufacturer, even if you think you don't need them.

You have accidentally pressed the center button. Just press either of the two other buttons and it should stop. If not, you need to get a new mouse.

use a cotton cloth, a napkin under it, or a sheet of paper (non glossy) .

if its wireless try changing the batteries (happens to me all of the time) :)
