It could be a legend if there is no basis for verifying its authenticity even to a little extent, particularly when the story has no set date. Sometimes, events of a recent past (say about two or three centuries earlier to the present time) that have some documentary evidence of their actually happening, do circulate. These cannot be classified as legend but could be called chronicle.

It is definitely a legend.

(Can't be a fairy tale because you don't mention fairies or magic; not a novel because you don't say absolutely that it is fiction or long or a book; it's definitely not a short story because short stories aren't handed down; an essay is completely the wrong genre; it could be a tall tale--but a tall tale is "tall"--in other words, greatly exaggerated, and you aren't talking about something that is exaggerated like paul bunyon; and a chronicle is not necessarily well known, nor handed down, nor is it necessarily about brave people.)

A legend is an unverified story handed down from earlier times, especially one popularly believed to be historical

fairy tale-A fanciful tale of legendary deeds and creatures, usually intended for children

novel- a extended fictional work in prose; usually in the form of a story

short story-a prose narrative shorter than you can read in one sitting

essay-an analytic or interpretive literary composition

tall tale-an improbable (unusual or incredible or fanciful) extremely exaggerated story

chronicle-a record or narrative description of past events in chronological order, a historical record

Yes, Legend. I was going to suggest Folklore before I saw that it was multiple choice.
