It is a shameless PR move that is working brilliantly it would appear. They treat their hostages nicely, respectably, show sympathy for the one woman being sent off to war since she is a mother. They release them in front of the media with the hostages looking happy, thanking them and shaking the President of Irans hand.

While I dont think Iran is entirely on the up and up one can never accuse them of being stupid after this.

Yes, specially since this was not the first time UK has done this. Those sailors must have strayed in Iranian waters either accidentally or on purpose. They did it in 2004 and Iran captured them. UK appologized and Iran released them promptly.

U.S. did the same thing. In 1988 USS Vincennes during a panic after seeing something on their radar shot down IranAir Flight 655 killing all 290 people aboard and then blatantly lied about their position and falsified radar charts to show they were outside of Iranian waters.

The truth came out during the next U.S. presidential elections revealing USS Vincennes's true position during the attack which was 7 miles inside Iranian waters. (This is why I love election time, for all the dirt from all sides comes out)

Iran also achieved a show of its muscle by doing the following:

1- Iran decided to release the female captive to show good faith and then Blair started talking tough so Iran cancelled the promise and sent a letter to UK.

2- The letter probably contained demands about future recognition of its borders;
Blair shutting up right away or else;
The release of the Iranian embassy official that was kidnapped in Iraq a few weeks ago;
God knows what else.

3- Needless to say Blair softened up right away and started chanting the "no ill will towards Iran" speech.

4- Iran also accomplished another goal by showing the world the captives on TV which was a big blow to the US. It gets to gloat and advertise its treatment of them compared to Abu Gharib and Guantanamo Bay.

5- Iran also seized the chance to advertise its mercy to the world even though this was the second time the Brits had violated it's waters.

6- Proved that neither UK nor US could do anything about it.

7- The Iranian embassy official who was kidnapped in Iraq was miraculously and magically released just before Iran announced the release of the UK sailors.

No matter how you look at it Iran came out ahead.

This blows the Neocons plans though and I didn't hear Fox news mentioning anything about the release. Typical of the righty's spin machine. I'm going to have to check up on Rage Limbaugh's view, so I can post a question on Polls & Survays today. I think that works a lot better then trying to get a real answer without spam from the right wing propagandist here on Politics. I ask the question and put it to a vote.

No. I think they have proven themselves to be masters at manipulating public opinion. It is kind of like a situation where I start your house on fire and, after waiting a bit, help you and your family get out safely. Am I an arsonist? Or a hero?

Sadly, many in this country seem to be buying into the manipulation.

LOL Iran released the sailors because Britain was chickens#($ and they got their point across that they can control what they want and Britain wont do NOTHING about it. LOL Negotiate with a terrorist? I think not. Britain showed their strength, which is none. They are so used to being controlled they think its normal.

No not really....the whole thing was cooked up to start with. The Brits weren't trespassing, shouldn't have been arrested and detained so being 'set free' is an empty gesture to make Iran look good.

no...it means they exploited the situation as much as they could ..and they couldn't get any more mileage out of it ,so the released them,also they did not want russia to become involved and possibly side with the brits,as they risk loosing the main supplier of their nuclear technology.

No, they didn't PROVE these things, but they clearly scored some propaganda points by appearing to be reasonable about negotiating and by appearing to treat the prisoners well.

iran looks great, they release prisoners in suits, they are well fed, no sign of torture. usa releases prisoners in coffins, or fully tortured in orange jump suit. this may mean little to americans, but to people like me around the world, we do notice this, its already in our papers.
