He is going to do a title search for me (about $500). Does he bill me, or do I pay before the work is done?

I've never used an atty before, and I don't know if I should plan to take money or what. It will also benefit me if he will be me within a week (when I get paid).

You are entering into a contract with the attorney, so the terms are negotiable. If the attorney wants payment up front, he or she will tell you so. We are not offended when people ask about payment arrangements and how billing is to be handled.
