In my situation, it would be awkward if I refused to attend holidays focused on religion merely because I am atheist. The rest of my family is christian. For me, it isn't about taking part in the gifting process while "disrespecting religious persons way of living." It's about doing things because I am expected to do it with my family. Believe me, I would much rather not celebrate Christmas, but I have to.

We don't want to be denied vacation time and days off work, so we take the time out, go see our friends and family and celebrate such things as Chocolate Egg Day or Winter Present Giving Day.
Also, consider being a child and being surrounded by children excited over Christmas, but if your parents aren't Christian you will be going without presents of the children's magic of Christmas which is anything but religious. That's rather cruel so why not give them the holiday without the religious connotations, so that they won't be outcast from society?

Most celebrated these events as children without having any ties to religion so they will traditionally still do so. The holidays were stolen from the pagans. These holidays are tied to events on Earth (winter solistice, arrival of spring) originally, not religious ones so a non-religious person would actually be more correct to celebrate them than a religious person denying the original origins of the dates.

Because holidays have more meanings than religious ones. They have also to do with social, community, family, and psychological reasons. Plus, nearly all holidays have pagan origins.
Holidays are about celebrating life. Everyone has the right to do this regardless of their opinion on religion. So get over it.

because the holidays have a civil/social aspect to them now.
christmas isn't about getting presents ( or about jesus's birthday), its about family and being together with the ones you love.
(note, i know its about the birth of christ etc, but watch any christmas movie,m particularly the cartoon christmas ones, and it'll be christmas is about "family")
essentially, the way to see it is there are two versions of christmas, the religious version, and the civil holiday for being together and celebrating as a family/nation.
disrespecting other peoples views and beliefs / religion is always wrong though, hold your own values high, and hold other's values equally high.
its a shame that i say this, and then in 5 minutes some other extremist christian will come on and protest about how i am "a sin against god" because i believe in loving whomever i want to love.. even if i always take care to respect other peoples religions.
too much hate in the world i guess..

The world has it's celebration and we have ours.We have Jesus the have Santa. We have Jesus they have the Easter bunny. They do have a right to celebrate. I don't feel they are disrespecting us.These kind of remarks are what makes SOME people point to us and say we are haters. please just have a wonderful Easter Day. Be blessed.

Because it was all pagan to begin with. The "egg", the "tree", with all it's "balls" hanging on it. And we all know what bunnies do! Are all fertility symbols.
Like we need to do "magic" to make babies RIGHT?
But God still has to work with the Laws of The Universe, (Physics). Not that He can't get around them, but they are "our" reality.
Ever notice that Christ "ascended", left this world? Exactly the opposite time of the year, 6 months later, as Halloween? When all the spirits are supposed to be drawn "to" this world?

Because it's easier to believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny than in God because they think God isn't real.
