It depends on what your "normal use" is.

If you spend a lot of time in city traffic (low speeds, stop-start, gentle acceleration and deceleration) then the Prius is very efficient.
If you spend more time at higher speeds (i.e. outside towns, on motorways, etc.), then a diesel car is more efficient.

According to the two tests I've seen on the TV it wasn't even that close.
It's purely a marketing exercise, it's mpg isn't that great, it's emissions aren't that great, and to top it off it's manufacture and disposal probably has a higher environmental impact.

Two things you need to consider.
1) If you can drive everywhere you go at not more than 25 MPH, your gas engine won't kick in, so, you won't use any gas. (that's when the gas engine kicks in). Can you do that?
2) Keep in mind, when your "Hybrid" need work, you can't take it to your favorite mechanic, you need to go to the dealer, and you know what that means! $$$$$

Depends on where you are driving. Town driving its much better. Out on the motorway/freeway probably worse.
