Problem-based learning (PBL) is a pedagogical strategy of "active learning" often used in higher education, but it can be adapted for use in K-12 education. It was pioneered and used extensively at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

The defining characteristics of PBL are:

Learning is driven by challenging, open-ended problems.
Students work in small collaborative groups.
Teachers take on the role as "facilitators" of learning.

That's about it. A problem is shown. Then you are taught how to solve the problem.

For instance: 4 black jelly beans and 96 yellow jelly beans. This makes 100 jelly beans total.

What is the percentage of black jelly beans out of those 100 jelly beans. (Kind of simple, but there you are.)

Another might be (using angles and such) to measure how high a tower is if you are on the ground and you can only measure how long the tower's shadow is. (And use the sun's angle. Sounds like a lot of work to me, though....)
