I'm going to go with probably the more unpopular answer here and say Lou Reed. David Bowie is a great singer, and I can easily see how versatile and appealing his work is, but for some reason, I've never been a big Bowie fan. I have tremendous admiration for his work, and recognize his place is the annals of rock history, but personally I don't find the majority of his work that appealing.

As for Lou Reed, I have never encountered a song he worked on I didn't love. Everything he did was imbibed with this raw, unadulterated emotion, and taking into account the unconventional yet hypnotic instrumentation of his songs, his fantastic voice, the nigh unparalelled songwriting, and the incredible vibe that all his songs give off, he is one of the most talented musicians of our time . To me, true talent in a musician is creating songs with the ability to make the audience FEEL, and in my opinion, Lou Reed epitomizes this. I never finish a song of his feeling the same as I did when I started it. Lou Reed is amazing.

Bowie. Although Lou Reed is a great singer-songwriter, and his band The Velvet Underground was instrumental in creating the early alternative rock scene, Bowie is more talented overall. He can play guitar, sing, play saxophone, write fantastic songs and reinvent himself over and over like a rock'n'roll phoenix rising from his own ashes. I like a lot of Lou Reed's early stuff, but not his current work. I can only name about five really great Lou Reed songs. I can name twenty great Bowie albums, each with five to seven fantastic rock classics!

it is quite confusing; Bowie wrote some quite astonishing textile and has a skill on quite much all musicians those days, yet Lou Reed probably invented the noise sort and has contributed lots to the worldwide of avant-garde rock song. i could say Bowie, because of the fact that he did no longer ruin Metallica interior the approach.
