With Vista on the horizon I would look at a few things depending on what you want it for:
1) CPU speed, I would go for an Intel 2 duo 7200
2) Hard drive look at the RPM you want at least 5200RPM. 7200 is better but you will not find it as an option by many OEMs
2) Video card, you have Intel, ATI and NVIDEA, if you want a gaming and / or graphics machine get the best (many sites compare the latest video cards online
3) RAM you want DDR2 PC2 5300 at least
Check the connections, video out, PC cards, 5 in 1, USBs etc... Do you want High Def video out do you want 5.1 audio surround sound etc...

May thing to look at, if you give us more info on want you want to use it for it would be easier for us

Choose an operating system, then a price range and search the web for Laptop Reviews.

Before you decide against Mac, go into an Apple Retail Store and try them. OS X beats Vista hands down!!!
