Please remember a lot of people who are on Yahoo answers do not use English as their first language. Correct English grammar can be very tricky if you do not speak or write English as your first language.
Spelling errors are a different matter, as there is a check spelling button right before the question/answer box in Yahoo answers. I guess some people are to lazy to use it; however, typos will always occur.
So before you say someone is "deficient in intelligence" for poor English grammar it may be that they are very smart in another language.

Before online chatting I used to think that bad grammar and bad spelling were both signs of a lower intellect. Now after some time on the internet I have realised that there are many explanations for either. English is not everyone’s first language, typing too fast, laziness and a general lack of attention to detail can be to blame.

Well, you just misspelled deficient.
No, some people are better at some things than others. Good grammar to me is proof that someone has either been to the right schools, or is of the social class in power.
Historically, the English language around London has been accepted as standard. American standard is probably that used in New York or Washington (or maybe Hollywood). Regional dialects look like "bad grammar", but they're just different.
English is really bad German anyway.

There were some TV programmes shown recently in Britain, on the subject of grammar, spelling, etc., and pedantry. Apparently, knowing how to spell doesn't make you a pedant; caring about it does. That makes me a pedant! When I see a misplaced apostrophe on a shop sign, I physically flinch and probably go in and ask them if they are aware. I do proofreading, editing etc. for money, but I am always offering to help people for free, just because it hurts my face to see errors in print. It's a bit of a paradox, because I can't keep my house tidy but I'm driven to tidy up any faulty grammar and spelling that I see!
Since my first son has been said to be borderline autistic, I have wondered if maybe I am too. And I have become more accepting of my own tendencies in this way. After all, there are uses for people like me. Anyone out there willing to spend £10 per 2400 words? (fii@gusjones.plus.com)

As far as i think, grammer is the basic part of speaking, writing and studying english.
Spellings could be realized but they are used just for a writing part. you don't need to show the spellings while speaking unless u r not asked to. If a person is not perfect with his grammer, he can never be.

No, I don't. I think that sometimes it's carelessness, sometimes it's lack of familiarity with the language, an inadequate vocabulary, or even a lack of education. I try not to assume a person is stupid when I see just one instance of poor writing. I do think it's a shame when people don't use the tools that are available to help them...like a spell checker.

The grammar part isn't exactly a sign of intellectual deficiency, but possibly laziness or ignorance. The thing that irks me is the spelling...there is a spell check pretty much everywhere you write so that is just plain laziness.

It is not that they are deficient in intelligence. They are misunderstood. In order to be "cool" or fit the social normals, they succumb to peer pressure and write with bad grammar. Maybe, they just write the way they talk. Either way, it's a freedom of expression.

Bad grammar is my pet peeve. However, I don't believe bad grammar proves that someone is unintelligent. I just think the person is too lazy to use the proper format. Spelling is another one: We have Spell Check, for God's sake!

Bad grammar and bad spelling are proof that our schools are failing to teach our children properly.
I can overlook bad grammar, but I do think there are so many dictionaries and spell checks out there that poor spelling can be easily checked and fixed.
