Well, you can do all the valuable things you can for your employer, but sometimes you run out of work.
Unfortunately, there are others who can't pay attention to their own job. They are very busy watching you to see that you are busy enough.
Save a few tasks to do just for them when they are looking. Never say things to indicate your ease. Complain about the busy workload. Walk fast to your next destination while looking at your watch.
Use the clipboard or notepad rouse.
And finally, watch those other busybodies for the chance to recommend a project for them.

What do you mean by saying "pretend to be busy"? Why should you pretend? Pretend is not a positive thing in this case.
