It would tap on the wheel to make a sound. This was before playing cards and spokes were invented.

Believe it or not they used to tap the wheels on railway engines and coaches.
They could tell by the sound if there were any cracks in the wheels, and if those cracks were bad enough for the train/carriage to be taken out of service for repair

It wakes the wheel up when when the wheel falls asleep. Good thing to have on a road trip.
