why will be the hilltops cooler than the ground.

Basic gas laws (in summary) state that temperature and pressure are directly proportional.

If Pressure goes up, so does Temperature. Likewise, as Pressure decreases, Temperature decreases.

The higher up into the atmosphere you go, the less pressure, therefore the lower the temperature.

This pressure also affects how we breath. Mountain climbers wear oxygen tanks not because there is less air, but because there is not enough pressure for their lungs to function properly.
