I am so disgusted by the election advertising done by both sides that I am not even looking forward to the conventions or the election itself! Am I the only one?

Most people don't know this, and nobody ever believes me when I say it, but politics was a much bloodier sport in the 18th and 19th centuries than in the modern era. Not to say that we don't have our fair share of problems, but I think it'd surprise many to hear how dirty it was.

Aaron Burr accused Alexander Hamilton of having an incestuous relationship with his daughter. We all know how that turned out, don't we? Burr killed the guy. That (arguably proven) rumor about Thomas Jefferson having an affair with one of his slaves? Yeah, that started when he was running for office. Opponents of Andrew Jackson accused him of being the son of a French prostitute. After Jackson won the election, his wife died of a heart attack. Jackson stopped short of swearing eternal vengeance (he blamed his wife's death on the stress of the merciless harassment).

So, no, not the dirtiest EVER, but a landmark election nevertheless. Plus, I know you were joking, but there's no way Bush is going to stay in office. He'd need to lead a military coup or something to pull a stunt like that off. The only president to not step down gracefully after two terms (before and after term limits) was FDR - a Democrat. Sorry.

Honestly, the major candidates in the election (Clinton, Obama, McCain, Giuliani) have all been fairly clean in previous elections in terms of negative advertising. There is likely to be some, but each of the candidates has had quite a bit of negative advertising done against them in the past, and it's more likely they will stay the high road and do a minimal amount of negative ads. Of course, that doesn't say anything for the various political organizations that are involved, so I guess we're probably in for a nasty election anyway. Oh well.

Joey I too am disgusted with the whole mess, but you have to realize that the right wing hate machine has done so many despicable things with their corruption in the Bush Administration. Right wing false propaganda and hate press, have gone to new levels. I do know one thing though, Hillary and Obama both have the funds to run good campaigns. The Republicans already had the funds available from this Administration being the wealthiest ever. I heard it was right at 800 million for the Republicans, and Hillary and Obama made their goals of 20 million both a piece. It will be interesting.

I don't know about "dirtiest"> It will be as dirty as Karl Rove and the boys can make it. But since there will not be an incumbent president running this time, BOTH parties will be throwing mud with both hands !

It looks as if new records will be set in the amount of money spent in campaigns for the nominations, and then for the general election, by a wide margin. MORE than a billion dollars, certainly, not only by the candidates and campaigns and parties themselves, but also by "independent "committees , who raise their own money in unlimited amounts, and can be as dirty in their tactics as they want to be, since they are not "officially" controlled by the party or candidate, they can get away with a lot more.

I suspect that you will see some of the nastiest charges and counter-charges in American history, that will make the "Dan Rather" case and the "Swift Boats Committee" seem like child's play by comparison.

I won't say for sure that it will be the dirtiest ever, but it sure will be a bit nastier than any election we've seen in a while, considering the varying positions American citizens have on the Iraqi War and the economic state of our nation. There's probably going to be alot of anger, no matter who wins.

I'm looking forward to the elections because it will be a time of change. I'm sure there will be mud-slinging, but we have to sort out what is fact against what are lies and BS. I'm sure there will be character assassins out there in all the camps so we'll see what happens. Overall, though, we need to change course and also need to address other important issues that have been swept under the carpet because of our foreign ventures.

I think the republicans will make it the dirtiest smear campaings ever.

Thats the only card they can truly play to try to give their side a chance.

Guliani is by far their only card to play.
McCain is getting more senseless by the day, and Flip Flop Rommney might have money but he wont stand up in debate.

I think everyone will bombard Clinton, and shes going to fire back at everyone. No stone will be left unturned.

In the end I hope America is smart enough to elect the best candidate for president. The one with the best resume, and the one that could do the best for the country.

Bill Richardson for president in 08.

Look him up.
Obama can say all he wants about the war, but what has he really done in his time in Office?
What legislation did he create?
Hes too wet behind the ears and really hasnt proven himself, whereas you have aBill Richardson who has done it all already.
Has the years of worldwide experience, and a proven track record for true service to his constituents!

Yes as long as Karl Rove has anything to do with it. John McCain will hire him I am sure seeing how Rove swiftboated him out of the 2000 election. John has already bought the vaseline. Shame for a war hero in his old age.

Bush will go to war with Iran and find a way to declare a state of emergency and Martial law and we will have no elections in 2008. Remember he wants to be king of the world, just like in the movies.
