Guinea pigs are wonderful pets. They live typically from 5 to 8 years. Really healthy guinea pigs can sometimes live up to 10 years, but I'm sure that's rare. A pair of guinea pigs is perfect! Guinea pigs are extremely sociable animals, and they live best when they have a companion. Make sure not to purchase two male guinea pigs, unless they are brothers. If they are not from the same litter, there's a chance that they will fight to the death. (especially when there is a female around, but you wouldn't have that problem) Make sure that if you buy a male and a female, that they are both fixed, because boy, do they multiply quickly! Unless you are ready to have 4 new guinea pigs every couple of months, I would suggest getting two of the same gender. If you do want to breed them, make sure that the two guinea pigs can have babies safely, and that they are healthy. Females who are older than 3 months and haven't gotten pregnant might have delivery problems. If you breed them, make sure the female is alone during birth, the male might accidentally hurt a baby, he might try to mate with the female (that wouldn't be good right after delivery), and he might try to mate with one of the babies. Guinea pigs are great pets.

If you are diligent about their diets--keeping dry food in an air tight container and giving them lots of fresh vitamin c rich foods like parsley and kale--then they should live at least five years. Many pet stores do not inform guinea pig buyers of the vitamin c requirement. My first guinea died of scurvy because I was not informed. They're great and will do well in a pair. Good luck.
