Damn, it took me like an hour to figure it out. Hope sqr function is allowed!
4! x log (sqr(sqr(4)) / sqrt(4)) + sqrt(4)
Note:
sqr(4) = 4*4 and sqrt(4) = 2
sqr ( sqr (4) ) = 2 ^ 8
sqr( sqr (4) ) / sqrt (4) = 2^7
log (sqr( sqr (4) ) / sqrt (4)) = 7
4! = 24
finally, 24 * 7 + 2 = 170
Interesting question, I'd be interested to see if there is a simpler answer to this.

sqrt 4 + 4 = 6
6 x 4 = 24
24 + sqrt4 + 4 = 30
30 + 4 + 4 + sqrt 4 = 40
40 x 4 =160
160 + 4 + 4 = 168
168 + sqrt 4 = 170
OR
6 x 4! + sqrt2 = 170 (quickest way)

this looks like fun.
44*4 = 160 + 16 = 176
176 - 4 = 172
172-sqrt(4) = 170
so, 44*4 - 4 - sqrt(4) = 176-4-2 = 170
and there you have it
