We have a very healthy and active 1 year old daughter. Our feeling from the day of her birth has been that she sleeps less than other infants. Also, she doesn't sleep until 10 or 11 at night, although she is not hungry and we maintain perfect silence in our home after 8:30 in the evening. Recently some friends told us that if small children don't sleep until very late at night, some brain related problems may arise when they become adults (we couldn't understand well, as our friend was speaking in Japanese). Do we need to worry about this? Is not sleeping of our daughter until very late some kind of disease or problem?
We will be very grateful to your suggestions.

Here is the way it was explained to me by my daughters doctor. Children are stimulated by everything when they are awake. Their brains are on high from the moment they wake until they sleep. Without the proper amount of sleep the brain does not have time to absorb and process all this new found information and therefore developmentally grow. I would think this would be a greater issue if your daughters sleep pattern was dramatically different, and got very little sleep. If she sleeps in or gets an afternoon naps she is most likely doing great. Talk to your doctor on her next visit, maybe even keep track of her sleep pattern and they can tell you if she is getting enough sleep for her needs at her age group.
Good luck and Sweet Dreams!!

We tried CIO 3 different times starting at 5 months and it never worked for us. After a full week my son still woke and cried for 2+ hours each time, up to 5 times a night. He is 12 months old and is sleeping 8 solid hours on average, we still have bad nights but it's not as often. He normally sleeps 8 hours, eats, and sleeps another 3 hours which is good in my opinion. What do you do when your daughter wakes? I would normally instantly feed to get my son back to sleep, I breastfeed. I had to stop breastfeeding at night completely. I offer a bottle with regular milk if I can't get him back to sleep any other way. After a consistent week of this my son started sleeping a full 8 hours and still seems to need to eat after that which I am ok with. On occasion he will wake before 8 hours and I give him a pat on the back to know he isn't alone and he goes right back to sleep. This works much better with him in my room, most of his night waking was for comfort only. Sometimes he wakes, stands up to see that I am there and goes right back to sleep. He sleeps in a pack and play.

Does she sleep at day time? If so, then just relax, I don't think that could be a problem.
I have a three year old daughter who sleeps late almost everynight. Sometimes I feel annoyed about this because I have to play with her after a whole day's work. But I never think it's a healthy problem.

no she doesnt have brain related problems. i mysekf have a 14 month old an she has rearranged her scheduele as well. i will make a bottle, ut her in her crib and she will scream if i dont lay next to her and touch her. she as well wont go to bed until late which is wierd, but it isnt a problem. she may just be going through a phase where she just isnt digging her bedtime and wants to be coddled a little more by you. i am not sure. just know i am a lot more tired myself and it just seems like my cadence wants me to be by her 24/7 now.
