Are you kidding?? The United States while proclaiming we are a democratic country, has, because of Roosevelt's New Deal become the biggest and most productive welfare state that ever existed!! What more proof do you need to affirm the influence of Socialism? Soon we will have government control of medicine, and then we will be able to call ourselves Socialists!!

Chow!!

Hi Bharat,

I dispute your claim. Socialism is NOT relevant anymore. Hugo Chavez is a throw-back to the 1950s and has no relevance to the future. Emerging economic powers like India and China are growing by leaps and bounds precisely because they've abandoned socialism.

There are no serious economists on the right or the left who are advocating socialism anymore. The evidence that free markets produce prosperity and lift nations out of poverty is no longer a debatable point.

The great debate now is how to make those free economies work best for the majority of people; it is not whether they should exist. That discussion is over.

I'll assume this is connected with Chavez and the various other Latin American Socialists that are doing well lately.

Since Chavez controls a lot of oil, and given the price of oil, and the US reliance on Venezuelan oil (it's closer,) that makes it relevant.

Interesting theory I read, drew parallels between the way the Soviet Union used it's oil wealth to prop up it's failing ideology in the 70s through purchases of animal feed (gee it was before Reagan too) and the way Chavez is currently using his oil wealth (still rumors that he'll nationalize the oil fields rather than just increasing his cut) to prop up his social programs for the poor.

The basic premise of your question makes the same mistake of each generation which has promoted some form of Socialism. In fact it doesn't work. It consumes resources (including the people) bringing all to the lowest common denominator except for a master elite.

Socialism is creeping more and more into our lives everyday. It is becoming the center-post of our society (I am not making a moral judgement of its being right or wrong).

It is starting to provide a government assisted safety net in more and more activities each day......

Examples:
Increase in Medicare/Medicaid coverage.
Increase of those eligible for Social Security
Increase in bankrupcy laws to debts are forgiven
Increase in taxes to pay for these services
