I think you're thinking about mostly movie they might air in Western countries. Most chinese movies nowadays in China are definitely NOT about monks, temples, swordsmen, etc.

I'm not sure about China, but the middle ages had a lot of fighting and religious institutions together. The Catholics had the Knights Templar, and the Knights of Malta and still have the Knights of Columbus (-:.

In Japan, Buddhism also was splitting into various sects, so temples often kept fighting monks on hand in case a rival sect (or upset politician) came by with their warriors to burn down the temple.

It's very ironic -- we think about religions such as Christianity and Buddhism promoting love and understanding. But back then, they were fighting for their rights to practice their religion the way they saw fit. And not fighting with lawyers, but with swords and numchuks!

for your info i have never seen a good chinese movie with a monk and if it doesn't have Gong Li it's not worth seeing becaise she's like the paris hilton if china.Only a very good actor and not trashy enough to be on playboy!
