how do I transfer data from my computer's hard disk (computer not booting) to my laptop?

If your computer is truly dead and you don't want to fix it, you can remove the hard drive and connect it to one of these little gadgets and then plug it into the USB port of your laptop and you will be able to copy everything!! I bought one and it works great - saved a lot of my data from a REALLY old computer:
