That's it more or less. The weak need the crutch. The christian death cult is our little group of hysteric mush heads we have to put up with.

Basically, I believe God exists because man doesn't have all of the answers - and that's frustrating.
Many gods existed in the past to explain the natural phenomenon that was was so frightening - volcanoes, lightening, thunder and so forth. He exists now to explain the huge hole we have when discussing the origin of the universe - especially since some of our very own physical laws make the creation of matter impossible.
I don't think man's "self-importance" plays as big a role here as much as his underlying fear of the unknown and his desire to be able to try and control an otherwise uncontrollable event or situation by his belief in a higher power.

I'm always a fan of the intelligent design argument. You know, the one where fundamentalists say that the reason all life has similarities is because God created everything and there is a common designer - therefore common parts. I like to flip that around. Why do nearly all religions have common veins running through them? You know, the do unto others, don't kill, cheat, steal, etc, etc? Maybe religion has a common designer, and that designer could be God, or it could be man. Man is a lonely creature the more he wakes up. We've got to explain the unexplainable, someone needs to have power over another so he creates a story and then enforces that story with the power of the church/state/cult, etc. I don't think, however, that it's because of an overwhelming sense of self importance. I think, instead, that it's because we need answers, need to control, need to be controlled, etc.

You say God exists to give people an overwhelming sense of self-importance. What does that mean? Which God are you talking about? Do you believe there is more than one? You could easily say God exists to give people an overwhelming sense of self-awarness, or an overwhelming sense of tranquility. The question is nonsensical. It doesn't mean anything. I could easily answer this question with a Yes or a No because there are no facts that prove what you're saying is true. Let me ask you this question. Do you believe an unknown planet exists to give people an overwhelming sense of self-importance? It is an unknown planet. You can't prove it's there. Does it do something for people? If so, what is your logic behind that assumption?

Your question is flawed, it makes the assumption that we created god. That has never been proved or disproved. Perhaps you should have asked, "Do I write inflammatory statements thinly disguised as questions simply because I have an overinflated ego?" Or "Why do I think I am smarter than all those christians?" Those questions can be answered. yours can't. Oh, and the answers would be, "yes"
and, "refer to last two words of you original question".

What is this question doing under politics and government?
Who created the universe and subsequently all life on earth?
God could have made this an accident but who really knows. This isn't a matter of religion but a matter of logic. Even Einstein believed in a supreme being who created the universe. If it was good enough for good old Albert, it is good enough for me.

Actually, when you reach a point when you accept God for who God truly is, you have to humble yourself and to realize there is something FAR greater than yourself. Self-importance is overcome by matters of faith, knowing that despite our weaknesses and inspite of who we truly are that God loves us. That is an over-riding factor for most everything that deals with myself. I no longer worry about things that aren't under my control. I can release it to the power and wisdom, and love of God.

Shouldn't this be a question in religion and spirituality rather than politics, because it really has nothing to do with politics other then politicians having a great sense of self importance.

I think the reason people denounce the existance of G-d is because of their overwhelming sense of self importance.

God exists and would exist if Man had never been or if Man ceased to exist. So the answer is no. Now go say your prayers.

You might also consider the opposite: that the human condition has an underwhelming sense of self importance.
