Well here's an answer from someone "older and wiser," I hope.
First, I didn't know what I wanted to until I finally decided on nursing because I had an interest in it. So I got my 4 year degree at the local university.
Right now, at the ripe old age of 58, which isn't nearly as bad as it sounds, I have no regrets about being a nurse for 25 years at a local Veteran's hospital.
But, I was put out to pasture and retirement disability because of physical problems. Since 2002, or so, I have been working at home as an artist. And I'm making a few bucks at it! WOW!
I was always creative and artistic, but my parents didn't think it would pay. I was asked once, "If you could see yourself doing something else right now, what would that be?"
My answer, not having done anything creative at that point, was envisioning being part of an art community where people really liked my stuff.
And NOW? It worked out just that way. I have repeat customers. Word of mouth is pushing my work, and I've sold all over the US, Canada, and even as far away as Australia and South Africa. Not bad, hey? I'm not rich at all, but I really love what I'm doing now.
That's the key. Do what you have a passion for or you'll never feel really satisfied and happy.

If I could do it over I would have looked for love a little harder when I was in my twenties. I kind of was hard on my self after a couple of bad experiences. Now I am conditioned to the loneliness and for a decade or so I had my pets but now the last one is on his final year, which will be a good one. I am prepared to remain alone for my entire life if need be. I wouldn't know where to start at this phase.

When I was younger, I wanted to be a Jedi Knight when I grew up.
Now, I still want to be a Jedi Knight. But I'll settle for some job that I don't hate that comes with health care.
Depressing how the reality sets in as you age...
