Ok I am not familiar with Chicago but I know it is one of the largest cities in the USA. So in the heck does a coyote roam into the middle of civilization?

He could have come from parks and the surrounding areas that have lots of parks, and forest preserves.

However, I feel that it is more likely he was a pet. Not only would it be a haul, but he did not look skinny, and was actually kinda plump. He most likely got away somehow and wondered off.

Chicago is surrounded by forests and has a lot of park land and forest preserves in the city limits. It's an excellent place for wild animals to thrive. I've seen coyotes, deer in urban areas, possums walking down the street, etc. A few years ago, there was a coyote hanging around the Art Institute. Now, granted, a coyote being bold enough to walk all the way through downtown and into a fast food joint is a little weird. But when an animal is hungry, it gets desperate. But there is a lot of forest-type area around Chicago. And there is a long river that, once you get away from the downtown area, is like a river in any other part of the country, with wildlife and birds and stuff living along the banks. The coyote could have walked along the river bank all the way to downtown. And being in proximity to a lot of garbage and food helps too.

I can imagine it would be pretty easy. I'm from Chicago. There are rivers and streams that start at Lake Michigan. The coyote probably just travelled along the stream, through yards, etc. I'd actually seen a Coyote near North Ave. beach (on Lake Michigan) in Chicago once. It was one of the rare occasions I've happened to see one.

Coyotes in downtown Chicago are actually fairly common. One is known to live in the park near Navy Pier. Animal control spent all of last summer trying to catch it, but with no luck.
The parks system is huge and many of the parks are contiguous. Think of Lincoln Park and Grant Park. A coyote could wander for miles without ever touching pavement.
Also, there is an enormous rabbit population downtown (in addition to squirrels, chip monks, ducks, geese, etc.). There are so many rabbits that the city has trouble maintaining gardens in the parks without substantial rabbit damage.
There was even a suggestion that the city needs more coyotes to control the rabbit population.
So you have plenty of wooded / park area, water and food. What more could a coyote want.

Its very simple. The coyote probable got in the city by following the railroad tracks. which can get you all the way to the lake front. It is also possible that it came up from the south by means of the Des plains River and the sanitary drainage and ship canal. then through the forest preserves. It could even have come along the lake front from Indiana,or from Wisconsin. But more then likely it came in from the western forest preserves, in and out of allies and peoples yards then along the forest preserves. He would hide during the day and move at night. That's my guess.

I don't know, but I believe there are whole generations of wild animals who have learned to cope and live with civilization. Chicago has large greenbelts which are home to many possible prey species for coyotes. When we lived in Wheaton about 8 years ago, I came home and found a coyote lounging in my backyard, so it may not be as uncommon as it seems.

Very easy.... Chicago has huge forest preserve districts that were set up to be mixed in with the city.
A few years ago, we had problems in some of the suburbs with coyotes eating peoples dogs and cats if they were left out in their yards!
I wish I could have seen it! I love coyotes :-)

Chicago is next to Lake Michigan and it has extensive parks. The coyote probably was hungry and the city has smells of food.

He was probably kidnapped by poachers, and woke up, and was dropped off by somebody. That would be my guess. Sometimes Wild Animals also go where the food is and that is in the city. Trash cans etc.
