I draw custom flash and have frequent requests for symbolic tattoos. There are several important things to consider before getting a tattoo that you will love and will bring you strength. First off, what style do you like? West Coast style or East Coast styles can be different. Are you drawn more toward tribal or asian style tattoos or do you like traditional styled tattoos? Look at as many different tattoo styles as possible to choose the look you want. This is important because you might or might not want a biker style tattoo depending on your taste.
In terms of symbols, what has always brought you peace? Are you a day person or night person? Do you have a particular religious belief that brings you strength? Do you identify with a particular ethnic group or background? How large do you want the tattoo and where would you like it placed? These are all very important things to consider since different parts of your body work with different types of tattoos.
I recently did a custom mandala for a friend experiencing a similar need for strength. Mandalas are know for healing properties, as well as being meditative. The circular design represents the cycle of balance in life. The center of the mandala can be your strength symbol. The sun, moon, and lotus flower are all great symbols of resiliance in times of change. A tree is also a symbol of growth.
Be careful if you get a character symbol for a tattoo. Make sure its meaning is accurate to the context.
Otherwise, I'd say make a list of things you love and use that to make your choice unique and meaningful to you. Stay away from novelty tattoos at this time, simply because you are seeking a tattoo that evokes inner strength.
Take your time to choose well. Your tattoo should be relevant to your life for long term.
Look at different images on the internet for inspiration. The right tattoo symbol is out there and when you see it, you'll know it is right for you.

The first thing that comes to mind is a phoenix - a mystical bird that rises from its own ashes to be born again... and think what a beautiful tattoo that could be!
You might also look for a book like "The Illustrated Book of Signs & Symbols", by Miranda Bruce-Mitford. I got a copy on clearance (cheap) at Border's Books.

WOW ! thats a tough one . first of all make it one you'll still love in the future & place it carefully . perhaps something that goes with your lifestyle . not knowing you it's hard to pin down an exact piece . by the way i'm an artist & draw flash mainly for myself & make frameable art for resale as well , so i've had some experience in this field . also not knowing your tastes , lifestyle or how radical or conserviive you are makes it difficult to trt to advise you . you could try looking at the flash in a few different tattoo salons . maybe an actual symbol that represents strength & beginnings , like an asian symbol ? as I said its a tough question . best of luck & don't sit down to the pins till you realy LOVE the tat you going to get . an artist with ink , me . tp. mullin popclt.com

I always liked the Tree of Life symbol, there are a lot of varieties out there for that one, you can find one interpretation you like:

Definitely a personal choice, but a phoenix rising from the ashes seems appropriate.

A drop of water or the sun, becasue they both start fresh; the water starts to fall and the sun starts to rise.
