I think I worded my question right... Ok so my dad and I were talking about my social problems again...and he actually suggested that it may be Asperger's Syndrome. We looked it up together and the things I saw kind of scared me. A lot of the characteristics and things mentioned seemed so much like me, but what I dont understand is why would it be classified as autism. In my mind, I always thought of it as being more different than everyone else. Awkward or weird if you want to call it that. If your'e wondering where I got most my information from, it was off wikipedia under a Asperger syndrome search. I wont go through all the social differences I found in myself because it's probably more than half off the list. My problem is: couldn't these be characteristics of anyone not just people with Asperger's syndrome? when I started to think that way it seems to me like I may not have it. It mentions having trouble to connect with others socially, but isn't that basically shy.

Some things that actually stood out to me and make me think I may have it are: often using reason instead of intuition, but to me that's thinking before you speak, another is the delay in motor skills, odd way of walking, and compulsive finger and arm movements, Iv'e been told I walk an odd way( stern and stiff) but it seems like when I'm at home I'll be a totally different person and more natural. Lastly is a very narrow amount of interest but I'm sure many people are like this.

Ok to answer some of the many different questions asked ;>_>
I have asked my parents to take me to a doctor to actually see if it is anything, but in the last 2 years they still really haven't taken any steps to seeking it out. Iv'e always thought I was shy, but also having a bad case of anxiety

First off, Wikipedia isin't the most accurate source of information. A hobo who rented a computer for a brain cell an hour could have posted that article on there. Second, shyness is when people are scared of the way others will think about them. If you're thinking about that, then you're just shy, not autistic. And by the way, how could you be autistic if you're typing this on your computer?

I think I can eerily relate with what you are saying. I have always been a very quiet person. I never really talked in school, and didn't have many friends. It's hard for me to make conversations, etc. I have read up on autism and asperger and I display some on the signs that they mention. Infact, I think that when I was in school that teachers or counselors might have even suggested to my parents that I might have some sort form of autism. But there are also quite a few signs that I do not display, too. I think that when you are a little "different" from the norm, people might readily point out so and so type of condition and try to classify you in that disorder. I don't feel like I have any of those disorders, but I can see how someone might ignorantly assume that I do. I do believe that you can be a little different without having those social disorders you've mentioned. It is just unusual to others, and people don't generally like unusual. At times it frustrates me with the way I am, but other times I don't care because it is unique.

If you are comfortable with the way you are, I don't feel like you should worry.

Have you talked to your doctor about this? It is possible that you are fine, just more mature/quiet than others in your age group. If you really feel that you have social problems, check this out with your doctor, and then get some help. You can practice walking so that it isn't so stiff and stern, and learn to control awkward movements, if they are just a habit. If on the whole, you are doing okay in school and have one or two friends, you are probably fine and just worrying. Not everyone can (or should) be the most popular kid in school.

Interesting, These ppl that have answered have good points. In answer to your question the difference is in the serverity of your actions and things. If what you do and how you feel and how you act interferes with your normal functioning of life, then perhaps it is what you think, but if your fine and no one has a problem with you or you are fine being just the way you are, then chances are your good to go. That sounds so "self-evaluated", but usually that's what it is. Try looking in the DSM (i think it now on its 6th ed. Revision) So, DSM VI Rev. ...something like that. But also make sure you know how to diagnose yourself properly or know how to use it. cause then its just worthless. :P

You see. The truth about yourself isn't so bad after all. My goose bumps have all gone now and I have long accepted myself as incurable so join the crowd and enjoy the ride cos there may be a light at the end of the day anyways. Just reach in and turn on the light.

Sounds like shyness....don't over analyze or compare yourself to others, when you find your path in life and are happy, you won't question these things. Everyone is in too much of a rush these days to fit in or grow up. If you talk with the elderly, things they learned over decades are what make them up today, and if you spend time with them, they aren't much different than us other than years of living and knowledge. The media puts too many images out there for us to compare ourselves to, and most of us do not have time to write the scenarios for our lives or edit them. You live, you make mistakes, you learn, and go on....it starts from when your little to when your old, and you never stop learning so don't fear things, because life is too short for that.

Do you want to be sick? Or, do you want to be well and normal? Which ever you dwell on, that is what you will be.

Anyone can have those problems if they concentrate on them and try hard enough.
