I'm no dummy and I do know that drinking while you are pregnant can seriously effect your baby. I did not even know that I was pregnant until I was about 18 weeks pregnant and I was suffering from alcoholism in a seriously bad way. I know that in some places if your baby is born with FAS that they will charge you with neglect and take your baby away. What about in my case as soon as I found out I quit. But they say that the first trimester is the most important. I can't go back in time and fix it and I hope that my baby turns out okay but I did not knowingly hurt my child so what will happen?

No one knows if your baby will have it until it's born. It's not likely that anyone will intervene and take your baby away, if you've been clean for that long. Even if it does have the syndrome, I'm sure the hospital can take great care of him/her. Don't worry yourself to death, just focus on taking care of that little baby! Congratulations, and may you have a wonderful childbirth experience.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is not genetic. A baby can only get Fetal Alcohol Syndrome if the mother drinks alcohol while the baby is in the womb. If your baby's father has fetal alcohol syndrome, then I'm guessing his condition isn't as bad as what it could get. But a lot of babies that have it turn out mentally challenged, deformed, etc. It can really cause a child a lot of problems. If you stay away from alcohol, your baby will not be born with fetal alcohol syndrome.

The main thing to remember is that you stopped drinking when you found out you were pregnant. If you didn't know you were pregnant how could you know you were endangering your child.

Naturally there is a chance your baby could have FAS. But that same chance says (s)he may not. All you can do is try not to worry about it and let your dr know (if you haven't already) about what you did before you were pregnant so that when your baby is born they can at least know its a possiblity.

I don't know for sure but I would like to think that you would not get in trouble since you did not know you were pregnant and you did stop as soon as you learned.

Best of luck to you and your baby.

Here is a link for you. It has a wealth of information which you may find helpful:
http://specialchildren.about.com/od/fetalalcoholsyndrome/a/familiesneed.htm

It has multiple listings of support and information for folks in your situation.

Unfortunately, some cases of FAE and FAS are not readily noticable at birth. While a child can appear "normal" at birth, it may be late preschool when the neurological damage becomes increasingly evident. Read Bonnie Buxton's book "Damaged Angels" for more info.

All of the ignorant people that tell an addict that they shouldn't have been drinking....do not understand fundamental issues of alcoholism. Go to AA and get started with a sponsor. You need the support & your baby depends on it.

Good luck and God Bless.

Try to not worry too much. He or she is probably going to be fine. You've stopped drinking and she has plenty of time to continue to develop and grow in the safety of your womb. I had a friend in grade school with FAS (very mild case and her mom drank every day she was pregnant) and she was a wonderful, nice human being who just had problems paying attention sometimes. Other than that she was great!

Because you stopped drinking when you found out and are getting help? that just means you are going to be an amazing mother. Good luck to you and that beautiful baby. You'll be fine. Just love him/her.

Hopefully nothing too bad will be wrong request an ultrasound as soon as possible and get all your blood work done so they can check for abnormalities, or diseases. I tool tamiflu for a week when I was about 4 weeks pregnant but I did not know I was pregnant either and that stuff can kill your fetus. and she turned out just fine

I understand what you're saying. I unknowingly drank alcohol until I found out I was 4 weeks pregnant. I was terrified. Everything turned out fine, and my son is a brilliant little boy. Just talk to your doctor about it. The sooner the better.

you need to be honest with your doctor about your situation and have them closely monitor the baby's condition the whole pregnancy.
hopefully it will all be ok. let this be a learning experience.
if you are still having problems with alcohol, try to get help with that too either with a counselor or A. A.

You were sexually active at the same time you were drinking.... how can you say that you didn't knowingly hurt your child. If you have that much of a problem with alcohol, then maybe it's better for a stable loving couple to raise your baby. If I can take responsibility for my own body, then you have no excuse.

That's what you get for drinking. Your child may suffer for your moronic mistakes.

This is why it's best not to drink at all.
