It's tradition, not a law. A woman can keep her name if she chooses to.

I was married for a full year before I finally took my husbands name. Mainly because I didn't like it. He was getting upset before I finally changed my name.

Some women never change their name. I had been married before and went back to my married name. I just wanted to be sure our marriage was going to work before I actually changed it again.

I would rather go by my maiden name anyday, but I know that when you are married most men feel better if you go by their last name.

Having been married and now divorced, I still have his name as do our children. When you sign the papers to get married and do so the state lists your married name. And that is the way most states in fact all do it. You get his name during the marriage and now it is your name. So it is rather simple try getting married or ask anyone who is and they will give you the same answer. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton kept her family name during marriage. She is now a Clinton but Rodham was her family name. So that should answer everything for you I hope. Good luck and I hope you understand.

WE'll It's tradition but to me, I feel proud to carry my husband name. I almost cried when they announced Mr. and Mrs. Shawn Rider for the first time. My daughter (Isobelle) has his name and I feel like a true family with all our names the same.

Because we are stupid! I wish I would have never changed my name. My mom always kept her maiden name, as did her sisters and mother.
