Let's make the numbers x and y, so we have:

x*y = -54 and x+y = 3

So, if x*y = -54, then y = -54/x

now let's substitute that in the second equation for y:

x + y = 3
x + -54/x = 3

now multiply everything by x:

x*x + -54/x * x = 3x
x^2 - 54 = 3x
x^2 - 3x -54 = 0
(x - 9) (x + 6) = 0
x = 9 or -6

If we substitute these values for x in, we get y = -6 when x = 9, and y = 9 when x = -6

so our 2 numbers are 9 and -6

Hope this helps :)

9 and -6 because:

9*-6= -54
9+-6= 3

Or, -9 and 6 because:

-9*6= -54
-9+6= 3
