Can you please describe aracnophobia (not sure about exact spelling)? I know it means fear from spiders. I know a lot of girls who are afraid of spiders. I can hardly imagine a spider in my mind without a disgusting feeling. Are all these cases signs of aracnophobia?

Arachnophobia is a specific phobia, an abnormal fear of spiders and sometimes other arachnids, such as scorpions and harvestmen. With an estimated half of all women, and one quarter of all men in the United States experiencing it in some degree[citation needed], it is among the most common of phobias. The reactions of arachnophobics often seem irrational to others (and sometimes to the sufferers themselves). People with arachnophobia tend to feel uneasy in any area they believe could harbor spiders or that has visible signs of their presence, such as webs. If they see a spider they may not enter the general vicinity until they have overcome the panic attack that is often associated with their phobia. They may feel humiliated if such episodes happen in the presence of peers or family members.

Like all traits, there is variability in the intensity of fears of spiders, and those with more intense fears are classified as phobic. Spiders, for instance, being relatively small, don’t fit the usual criteria for a threat in the animal kingdom where size is a key factor, but most species are venomous (although many of the venoms produced by these species having no effect on humans), and some are lethal. Arachnophobes will spare no effort to make sure that their whereabouts are spider-free, hence they would have sharply reducted the risk of being bitten in ancestral environments.

Yes, those are all different degrees of arachnophobia. Most professionals won't actually apply the term unless the fear is so intense that it interfers with normal life. Like, you are so afraid of spiders that you have to unlace your shoes and spend ten minutes making sure there are no spiders inside every morning.

A phobia is not just a regular fear of something. It is a fear that causes emotional instability or panic attacks. You can fear many things, but seeing a spider may not put you at risk for a seizure or panic attack or hyperventilation, etc.

All I know is that I do check my bed, my shoes, my pants and my shirt, socks, and underwear before putting them on for spiders. I hate spiders, I really freak out around them. Also I pay Orkin a hefty sum for Keeping my house spider free. I love my orkin man.
