Creationist POV:
The chicken because it was greated by God.
Evolutionist POV:
The egg was laid by a close relative of the chicken as the family was evolving into the bird we know today.

We were discussing this at work the other day and we concluded that it was the chicken. Not due to any type of creationism theory, but because the egg probably became necessary over time as a form of protection of the baby chicks. Have no idea if that theory holds any water, but that's what we came up with.
The theory that the chicken evolved through a similiar egg-laying creature or cousin was also discussed.

If you believe in god, then the chicken. he magically plopped chickens and stuff everywhere but logically, the egg came from evolution. the species it was originally had to evolve for whatever purpose into a chicken and during that time it evolved in the egg.

from a seventh graders point of view...
the egg because something that was similar to a chicken had sex with an animal that laid eggs
the animal that laid the eggs got pregnat and laid the egg and voila the first chiken
