Napoleon needed money for his wars against England, and other countries. One way to raise money was to sell real estate. Thomas Jefferson, a wise President, saw an opportunity. He sent a trusted aide, James Monroe (a future President) to France to try and buy what is now the state of Louisiana. Napoleon raised both the price and the amount of real estate. He offered to sell the rights to basically everything west of the mississippi river. Jefferson did not have the legal authority, but he agreed to the deal anyway, and with the Louisiana Purchase, he doubled the size of the USA.

Well, Napoleon Bonoparte needed money since he was fighting the Brittish, so he sold the French rights to North America to Thomas Jefferson in 1803, for $15 million, , which effectively doubled the size of the United States and paved the way for the US to start their expansion to the west coast! It was the best land deal in US history since it cost about 3 cents an acre. Go Jefferson!

Also, it was sold by Napolian to finance his wars. In the contract there were no designated measurements and he told the US that they could be creative with that, so through that purchase the US could also claim other areas such as Oregon. The purchase doubled the US's size.
