I work freelance for a toy company and an aquaintence of mine who works there recently asked me if I would do some sculpts for some action figures he's hoping to market (approx. 5" by 3" by 3") and I have NO idea how much I should charge him. Can anyone give me some pricing suggestions so I don't rip myself off or the guy asking me to do this? Thanks!

It depends on the working and reworking you have to do and what they are providing you - are you working from sketches or are you doing the research and creative sides?
If you don't want to go to the hassle of collecting royalties or need at least some cash now with a smaller percentage later, several hundred dollars a figure if you are doing the creative, a hundred dollars a figure and $50 a rework if they are giving you good original art to work from. This is assuming you work fairly quickly and accurately so a figure is a few hours work.

At the minimum, I would charge for any expenses you think would be incurred (i.e. materials) and the value (per hour) you place on your own time (i.e. how much would you want to get paid to give up a full Saturday?). At this point, you're pretty much at a breakeven on your end, and more-or-less pulling a favour for your acquaintence.

Then, I would factor in a premium that takes into account your years of experience needed to build your skillset (i.e. plumbers charging $100/hr doesn't make sense until you consider 6 years worth of experience that goes into building the skill). I would ask others in your trade what they would charge to see if you're on the ball, but be sure to let your acquaintence know what the going market rate is (especially if you pass on a deal)

Hope that helps as a starting point!
