The Autobiography of Malcolm X
- Who's the author?
- Is that during the 1960s?

Any other suggestions:

- It has to be in the 1960s b/c that's what we're learning about in my College American History class
- No less than 200 pages
- "college" level reading - just like not a dumb kid book

THANKS FOR YOUR SUGGESTIONS!

Malcolm X's autobiography was co-Authored by Alex Haley. I read it in a 60's history class and I was impressed by his poor kid upbringing. Made all the more sense for his militant, get what I want sort of attitude later in life.
But As the other answer says, Abbie hoffman, is quite a character. I did a report on his life and he knew influential people, hung around with a couple stars/artists, wrote steal this book which was "stolen" about a dozen times over a short period of time at the central library in nyc. I think they admitted to not carrying a copy actually because they got tired of replacing it. But you read it and see if I'm wrong. Another strong personality you could read about it Maya Angelou the poet and public speaker. She's got quite a lifestory that is still going strong.
Many artists and poets are worthy subjects. Any one of the artists involved in the Harlem Renaissance built up Black awareness and gave the people back their own, you know? Among them, is Langston Hughes, however, I think I am mistaken as Renaissance wasn't the 60s but a decade or two earlier, but the movement lasted a while anyway. Are you allowed to read about musicians? Any number of those classic groups are sure to have bios on the "lead" singers. And you could always go for political figures; Right's activists,Presidents, or even entrepreneurs who started out selling one thing and now make millions.
Good luck and have fun.

Why not write about America's involvement in Viet Nam. That began in the 60's. I'm sure that being in collage you can find all sorts of material on that.

-Malcolm X is good (Alex Haley is co-author I believe)
-Coming of Age in Mississippi is also very good, by Anne Moody.
-Born on the 4th of July - Ron Kovic

Let us know what you decide on
