If he wanted to turn Japan over to Russia. This would have avoided between half a million and a million American casualties. It also would have punished the Japanese first by causing tens of millions of deaths then the survivors would have been inside the Iron Curtain for more than half a century. Luckily for the Japanese Truman did the right thing and ended the war with a minimal loss of life.

Truman did not drop the bomb. The crew of the Enola Gay did that. They were following orders. The bomb stopped the ww 2. That should not have happened because it killed many innocent people and harmed the environment. We kill a few to save the many. We take the easy route. We seek to win rather than resolve. Why don't we just nuke everyone but America? This is the same reason because the better side of us knows we will be doomed by our own greed and desire for power. If we are not careful this can still happen as did the fall of Rome. The splitting of the adam was not meant to be used in making a weapon of mass destruction. It was to be used for the good of man kind, not the destruction. " Where have all the Flowers gone" Song from the 60's." When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn." The weapon should have only been used as a last resort. It was not our last resort. Only a statement that my gun is bigger than your gun.
So I win, or I will drop it again. This does not make it right or make my opinion right. It's only my heart felt opinion. Rev. TomCat

People who say he should not have are a bunch of whining snivelers. I'm sorry, but dropping the bomb was 100% the right thing to do, both militarily and morally. Talk to veterans of WW II, Korea, or Vietnam and see what the position of those who know is on this matter, then if you wish, come back on line and ask why people who fought in wars are all such bloodthirsty brutes. We're not----we simply understand the facts of Battle from a personal perspective----that does not mean that I'm in favor of settling disputes by force---it just means that the appropriate reaction is fitting and proper.

To maintain the moral high ground going into the Cold War, but if the fire bombing and impending deaths of more GIs was the price for not dropping it, then it would've been the wrong decision. On the other hand, the feelers that the Japanese sent out through the Swedish embassy regarding peace might have played out. But looking at the iron control of the militaristic leaders, i doubt the war would've ended soon.

He didn't have any idea how powerful it was ... and he wanted to win and end the war.

The war ended immediately, too many people died.

But if we had tried to invade Japan then it would have been worse than Iraq and thousands of our soldiers/children would have died.

He should and would not have dropped it if he really understood its power to kill and destroy.

I do think we should have dropped it in a great big unpopulated place ... not Hiroshima or Nagasaki,,, they would have surrendered anyway. Truman didn't know,

War is stupid!

He had a choice, he could have dropped it on an industrial complex, an uninhabited area or right smack in the middle of downtown, the deterrent effect and the message would have been the same, he chose in a middle of a densely populated downtown.

He did the right thing.A invasion of Japan would have cost hundreds of thousands american lives. And more japs were killed by conventional bombs than were killed by the two a bombs.Dropping the bomb was the right thing to do.It was total war.
