I have and older computer and when I start it up I get a "disk read error occurred" then below said ctl+alt+del to restart. I restarted the computer with ctl+alt+del and the same thing happened again. I went into the bios and every thing seems fine, also there is nothing in my floppy drive or my cd drive. It will not start in safe mode. I even hooked my hard drive up to another computer and that computer started and worked without any problems. My son was the last person on this computer and he swears it was working fine when he turned it off. Is there any other reasons that could cause a disk read error? Thanks for any help.

Everything that snvffy said. That is very good advice, but one more thing too. Check to make sure that your floppy drive is working properly. Some older computers check the floppy drive on boot up (actually most computers can, but newer systems are set to read the CD Rom first). If your floppy drive died then you can get the "disk read error" message and your system will halt.

Sure.

First check all your connections to make sure they are all tight and secure, including the power and cables.

If your hard drive controller is on a card, remove and reseat the card tightly into the slots.

If you continue to get the same error, try another hard drive in your computer. If you get the same error with another hard drive, it would seem to suggest your hard drive controller is bad.

maybe its not plugged into the proper ide channel ... or ... make sure its on ide0 on the end of the cable and is set to master or cable select ... then load bios defaults ...
