yeah, curious. just a quick look at encarta tells us
Definition: (troop)
1. big group: a large group of similar people, animals, or things
2. military military unit: a unit of soldiers that forms a subdivision of a cavalry or armored cavalry squadron .

they love to ad garbage to the language. remember islamofascism? lol. almost no one that uses the term has a clue what they're even saying. more properly termed clerical fascism. but now we have a new though somewhat illiterate term.

They refer to soldiers as troops, e.g. 4 soldiers are 4 troops. But I don't hear or see anybody using this in the singular, referring to one soldier as a troop. Anyway, this is common usage, so it's all right, I think.

because the president used it in a speech and the media is too lazy to look up the word troop and see it is a plural or 3 or more.
