And that's being generous.

It is not a democracy, the USA is a representative republic and considering the turmoil that has occurred in the past fifty years, the fact that our political system is still up and stable (the roads get built, the libraries have books, student aid is available, emergency medical care is available to any one, our military is so intimidating that the thought of an invasion of our borders is suicide, we have had no bloody coups, all in all a pretty stable country) is proof of the strength of our representative republic. We have people who we elect to make the rules for our society, if we had a true democracy then everyone would have to be politician, and who wants a world filled with politicians. It is much better to just pick a few people to do that work, send then to Washington and get then away from the rest of us. Anyway, about the rich getting what they want with no concern for the future, I have to ask on what stereotypical generalizations that you come up with that hypothesis from. Rich people are people too, just like me and you, the vast majority of them try to be good people. To equate wealth with greed is as accurate as associating low morals with low income. Both are ludicrous, you are who you are regardless of how much money you have, in fact there are entire industries set up around raising funds for charitable organizations, more often then not, "rich" people give back a good amount and never ask for credit fro their generosity, so that whole point about the "rich"is completely intellectually vapid. Special interest groups decide who we get to vote for by financing the ads we demand from our candidates. We get what we ask for in our representative democracy.

Well, we're a Representative Republic, to begin with. We never
were a Democracy.
The problem is our representation can currently be bought.
This problem is as old as Republics themselves. Its not like
there haven't been scandals like Abramoff going back to the
US's origins.
Corruption is bad - and finding and rooting it out is good.
So what else is new?
However, I agree that we're getting to the point with advertising
(and its costs) that we should be looking at ways of electing people
that don't essentially require they be millionaires.
Unfortunately, that means looking hard at if/how to curtail
the free speech advertisements that millionaires can buy but
non-millionaires cannot. The 1st amendment is so fundamental
to what this country is that there would have to be a real firestorm
to go anywhere near it.

Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what's for dinner. Freedom is a well-armed lamb disputing the vote.
Back in the 1770s we had a similar problem--the king and his rich friends ran everything and charged us taxes to pay for it all. Don't underestimate the strength of people who are committed to working together to make a change.

The United States is not now, nor has it ever been a democracy. It is a representative republic. If you want to stop the rich from running the country, get active, campaign, talk to people. I hear every day how the country is going to hades in a handbasket, but I rarely see someone doing anything to stop it.

When we vote for a REAL leader. One that is not afraid to remind the world why we are considered a "Superpower" and not just another nation. These terrorists are testing our democracy. They know that we won't do the same because we have to promote that democracy is the right thing and show that we care about innocent lives. We should not feel sorry for our enemy's "innocent lives" when they attack ours. I say at a time of war, democracy rules should be exempt to our enemy. Otherwise our wars will be political and we will continue to fall. That should go for others who support our enemies as well.

We have never been a democracy, but we have now, as you say, become a Corporate Republic, with the best politics that money can buy. As we have abdicated our part in the equation by becoming ignore-ant and not voting, these guys can do whatever they please, as they know we don't care to find out much of anything. We could take it back, but that would mean we would have to care enough to be informed, and put down the remote long enough to go vote. Are we up to it, or do we all want to become low income wage slaves for "the man."

Don't worry so much about the rich Americans, worry about all the blood thirsty (muslems) ppl who don't want to get along that are taking over this country with their backwards laws and their determination to make the world bow down to their imaginary god.
