Well, according to an older Department of Justice report I found, about 82,500 people a year defend themselves or their property with a firearm yearly (from 1987 to 1992). If there is more current info, I did not find it but will edit this answer if I find something.

I fail to see the relevance in the question.
The fact is that the right to bear arms has nothing to do with personal defence. Our founding fathers were not concerned with criminals, whose capacities for mischief is limited to theft of replaceable property or simple murder.
What they were concerned about was a threat far more serious than that.
They were concerned about the ability to throw off tyrannical government, something difficult if not impossible for an unarmed populace. While a criminal can kill you, a government can enslave a whole population forever.
This is obvious to anyone who considers the experience of the founding fathers just prior to the signing of the Constitution.

I carry my weapon everywhere I go. Ask any rape, murder, kidnap victim... They'll tell you that it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Ask any rapist, murderer, or kidnapper; their greatest fear is a person who has the means to inflict EFFECTIVE self defense methods. The little pepperspray key ring is not an effective self defense method.
