My Dad was an awesome cook, and he never took cooking lessons. My ex-husband was also an excellent cook, but he took some classes with me. I was a great cook before the classes and so was he, but we just wanted to learn different ways of cooking.
Yes, I would buy cooking lessons for them, in case something happened to me that I couldn't cook, then they would be able to cook for themselves.
My parents raised 14 kids (7 boys and 7 girls) and everyone of us knows how to cook and bake. I think it is important.
I think that everyone should have to take a cooking class and an auto mechanics class in high school, Males and Females.

As a man I think it would be pretty cool to take with someone I really cared about. It would show that you are willing to learn some new things, especially if he feels that you are trying to improve for his benefit. For him, it may be kind of cool to know how to do something that he may have been too intimidated to try.
My wife and I sometimes bond by being in the kitchen together, despite the fact that I cannot cook well (I usually just help by mixing things or adding the seasoning that she asks for). Her father's few specialties are also something that she always looks forward to. She loves it when he cooks for her.
If you're not going to go with him, he may see it as a way for you to push him into something he is not interested in doing. It is also a great way for him to meet other women if your relationship is not strong.

My husband, or whatever he is right now, is not allowed to use sharp objects like knives. At least he wasn't in my kitchen. Damned fool nearly lost a finger more than once doing dishes or trying to chop veggies. Men!
