President is technically supposed to be capitalized when it's used as a title (President Hayes) or as the president of a specific organization. You don't have to...but you should. (Most people won't really care)

President Hayes served four years, I believe (or maybe eight...but I think four)

President Garfield served less than one year. He was assassinated by Charles Guiteau in '81 and died that summer.

RUTHERFORD BIRCHARD HAYES 19th president of the United States (1877-81).

JAMES ABRAM GARFIELD 20th president of the United States (March 4-Sept. 19, 1881)

President Garfield is capitalized, as it is a proper noun, but 20th president is not, as it is a common noun.
