You're right that there is no definitive answer to that question. But one theory which hasn't been mentioned is that the universe arose from the vacuum which existed before the big bang. This theory proposes virtual particles, that experiments have shown the vacuum of space contains, existed until one, by chance, came into being with the total energy of the universe. This energy in the form of radiation cooled to become the background radiation and the protons, neutrons, and electrons the universe is now composed of. One possible answer is found in an really old but highly regarded book. It starts out. "In the beginning God Created" But then, who created God? Answer, noone. HE has always been. How else would you explain the complexity, unity and diversity of everything....from sub-atoms, to energy, liquid, gases, solids and matter. It all works together. The sun is in the exact place it needs to be to sustain life.
A philosopher (I think it was Jean Paul Sarte) said "the basic problem is that there is something there rather than nothing there.
We have 2 choices. Either life as we know it came from non-life or there really is a supreme being behind it all.

Some throrise about 'The String Theory' where matter existed in another dimension (which perhaps still exists) and something hapened there which created the big bang and our universe.

Thats a hard question, but my opinion is that it was just blank space. Alot of blackness.
But then how did that get there?
There always had to be a beginning to a beginning and its so hard to figure out.

No one knows... yet. There aren't even any hypotheses other than mine: our universe was created by some ultra advanced intelligence as a new home when their universe was wearing out.

I think something had to exist. Whether it was energy or matter, I don't know. I don't know of any case where something came from nothing.
