My husband and I are going to be moving into our new house soon and we have lived in this one for a very long time. Our puppy (now a big dog) had potty training problems when we first got her. Also I watched my sisters cat while she was gone for a couple of months and that cat felt the need to mark her territory. We've tried shampooing the carpets which have made a big difference. Although I want to be sure the odor is completely out! My sister mentioned something about white vinegar? Does anyone know what she may have been taking about? Or does anyone have any ways to make sure the odor is out without ripping up the carpet??? Thank you! (any rude comments will be reported)

I asked the Stanley Steemer people once what they do for pet stains, and they said they just pre-treat with vinegar and then steam the area well. I think that would be your best bet.

The way to treat your carpets is to invest in a carpet/rug cleaner. Walmart sells 2 products which I have found work great and unlike some pet eliminating products these work right in a carpet cleaning machine... they eliminate pet stains and neutralize pet odors. They are... Odo Ban pet (in the pet section) and Bissell Pet & Odor (in the carpet cleaner section) They also have a pleasant scent, and by cleaning the carpets it also picks up any fur that your vacuum may have missed. There are other products that you can buy at pet stores however with those you have to pour the liquid and leave it there to dry on its own .. can take along time to dry and will damage your carpet, padding and wood underneath. The carpet cleaner does a great job and dries rather quickly I use a carpet cleaner weekly/biweekly (have 6 dogs)

There is some stuff that we use called Complete Stain & Odor Remover from Target. This stuff is really good at removing stains and odor. We use it all of the time. We have a Lab and a Cocker Spaniel and this stuff has been a life saver. You can find it in the pet isle near the shampoos. I believe Target is the only store that carries it. Good luck.

I found the BEST stuff for pet odors. That includes cat urine- the worst in the world, in my opinion. It also gets out stains and can be used with your laundry. It is called Capture and you can get it at Home Depot. Nature's Miracle (the most popular suggestion) does not even come close to it. Vinegar is okay, but it won't eat the bacteria like an enzymatic will.

You're not alone. Many people have had this problem.

Are you going to steam the carpet yourself or hire a service?

The service has chemicals...

For the do-it-yourself route, there are cleaners that contain enzymes that break down those chemicals in pee. Check wal-mart or similar stores where they have the carpet cleaning solutions. Look for solutions that contain enzymes.

Also, you can go to the pet store, they can point out what products you can use. I've seen many cleaning products at Petsmart and Petco.

I work in the pet department. We have a solution we sell that is suppose to take out pet odor. I would buy that. Go to Walmart and go to the pet section and ask for pet odor remover.
