Im having a tough decision choosing between the two colleges. I like Berkeley's prestige, but im thinking it might too be hard and all work no play. Then there is Santa Barbara which is beautiful and fun, but is it too much of a party school. Please help me with my decision.

Berkeley's economics program is ranked third in the US. Their undergraduate business school is ranked third in the nation as well.

While all the UC schools are good, you would be an idiot not to go to Berkeley if you are interested in economics.

I think it depends on what you are trying to get out of college. Do you know what field you want to study yet? Both Berkeley and UCSB are top level schools, but they are good in different departments (I don't know which off the top of my head, sorry).
It's true that Berkeley has a better national reputation, but your undergrad college's name doesn't really matter as much as people say when you're already in the top level schools. I think you could have a good time either place, also: SB is gorgeous, so maybe if you like outdoor activities go there; Berkeley is political, so if you're into that, go there.
Really, you can't make a bad choice here, so don't stress -- you can transfer later on if you think you made the wrong decision.

Some key advice: PLAN AHEAD! Get a good idea of what you want to do before you make the decision; if you go to a school that's good for science but want to transfer to business two years later, it's pretty difficult to get into a prestigious one since most of those schools start prepping their students freshman year. I personally would choose UCSB; not many people have the opportunity to go to UCSB, but even fewer have the chance to go to Cal. UCSB is a little too much of a party school, but definitely a nice location. Cal has tons to do (get involved in Greek life, sports, etc.) but isn't a great location (the campus is really nice, but the city Berkeley is pretty run down). Overall, it should depend on what you want to pursue a degree in, but I would probably choose Berkeley. Good luck with your decision.

Econ, while not that easy at Berkeley, is still easier than some other majors.

Definitely pick Berkeley. You'll definitely be able to find time to have fun at Berkeley if you're an Econ major. I imagine you'd want to go to grad school later. The degree from Berkeley is going to make you look much better as a candidate than one from SB.

It's absolutely stupid to attend a party school if you got into a college like Berkeley that has a good reputation that will get you places for the rest of your life.
