I suggest you vistit the Fermi National Acceleartor Lab Page at www.fnal.gov.

The scientiests at Fermi discovered the top quark in 1995 (the last of the six I believe to be discovered)

The following from the webiste details how their particle acceleartors works and how they found the quark:

Beams of protons and antiprotons collide at nearly the speed of light in Fermilab's Tevatron accelerator. Millions of times a second, protons and antiprotons burst into showers of secondary particles: quarks, electrons, muons, neutrinos, ... there are more than a hundred possibilities. By studying the particles, physicists learn about the elementary building blocks and fundamental forces that determine the nature of matter—and the ultimate structure and evolution of the universe.

Hope this helps. I have been to Fermi several times -- and it's very neat place -- you should take some time to look around their website for mor information!

I think the six types of quarks are: Up and Down, Left and Right, Strange and Charmed. I am fairly certain about the first tow and certain about the last two.

It's all in there. Murray Gell-Mann discovered them.
