I live in an OLD house. (80 years) We put up a stockade wooden fence that is now ugly. I want to use a solid color stain on the fence to cover its ugliness. My house is greenish grey with white trim. I want to keep with the character of the house, BUT I don't have the desire to try to keep a white fence clean. (So white is out of the question). I was thinking of grey but didn't know if that seemed like an odd color. I have also considered like a barn red.
Oh yeah...my backyard is very small.
THanks for your advice!!

Before you stain the fence, try power washing the fence. You may like the "natural" color of the wood.
You need to wash it anyway before you paint or stain.

You've already identified the three best choices....

White would be the traditional color and would look the best. A white oil based paint on a fence actually doesn't get that dirty because of wind and rain and you may wish to reconsider eliminating it.

A shade of grey would be the modern choice. It's very easy, very conservative, and won't attract much attention.

A dark red such as the "barn red" you suggested would stand out and be noticed. That color is rather fade resistant and delivers a very warm look.

The two questions you need to ask before deciding on one of these three colors is: 1) What best fits my personality? and 2) What do I plan on planting against the fence? For example, If you plan on painting the fence barn red, pink or red flowers won't have near the impact and pastels would go best with grey or white.

The size of your yard doesn't matter much regarding the color as the stockade fence would already provide a sense of enclosure more profound than any color selection.

why don't you go to lowe's and take a sample of your house color and let the machine pick a color that will be a compliment

i think barn red would not tie in together with the house, i think that your idea is great for greenish or, gray lite stain would give it a soft age to it, to compliment the house.
